Quality Club Goats in High Demand at Fifth Annual
Mississippi Club Goat Association Sale
July 7, 2008
-The fifth annual “Dixie Opportunity” Club Goat Sale proved to be a success
for the Mississippi Club Goat Association. MCGA President Jessie Cornelius
welcomed a large crowd of bidders following an outstanding lunch prepared by
Sale Manager Wade Henson. Producers from ten different breeding programs
offered quality Mississippi bred goats in the sale.
A total of 79 lots
were sold for a $223.67 per head average. High selling wether was consigned
by Lazy 91 Club Goats. Lot 19 was a son of Out There by a Lazy 91 bred doe
and sold to the Driggers family of Ashburn, GA for $1,075. The second high
selling wether was Lot 44 from Lazy 91 sired by Hard Copy and a Kohls doe.
This paint wether sold to the Turbville family from Madison, MS at a final
bid of $775. The high selling doe kid went to Jacy Vaughn of Kilmichael, MS
at $525. This daughter of Zurimo and a Keenum bred doe was consigned by
Randy Keenum of Kilmichael. The second high selling doe came from Tucker
Farms of Hattiesburg and went to the Cawley family of Ashburn, GA at $450.
This doe was sired by Doolittle and a Tucker bred doe. Volume buyer for the
day was the Driggers family from Georgia with three head purchased to total
$1,675. Second high volume buyer was Dwayne Cobb of Pinola, MS at $1,100 on
four head. “We have once again accomplished our objective of offering the
very best Mississippi bred goats to our buyers. Some of the top sellers went
to out-of-state buyers, but several top quality goats still stayed in the
state,” said Cornelius.
Goats sold in the sale
were eligible for the MS Bred program. This program sponsored by MCGA,
provides exhibitors of MS Bred and tagged goats, additional class money at
State Fair and Dixie National. The MS Bred ear tags are purchased by
breeders for $5 each. Tag proceeds fund additional class premiums for
exhibitors. All MS Bred ear tags must be put in the goats by September 1.

This year, for the
first time, the eight division champions from each of the four weight groups
at the Dixie National Market Goat Show will be included in the prestigious
Dixie National Sale of Junior Champions. There will also be a Commercial
Meat Doe show added for junior exhibitors at both State Fair and Dixie
National. MCGA is hopeful these additions will help to increase the total
number of goats shown in the state.
MCGA sponsored a
raffle for two doe kids donated by Robinson Club Goats of Raleigh and C4
Club Goats of Plantersville with all proceeds going toward the Champion and
Reserve Champion MS Bred does in the Commercial Doe Shows at the State Fair
and Dixie National. As a result of this successful raffle, MCGA will pay
$300 and $150 to the MS Bred Champions at State Fair and $500 and $300 to
the MS Bred Champions at Dixie National. The association will also sponsor
division awards in the Mississippi bred Market Goat and Commercial Meat Doe
show at the Mississippi State Fair and Dixie National Junior Roundup.
